About
Q. What is Derby Days?
A. Derby Days is a philanthropy festival being hosted this spring benefiting the Huntsman Cancer Institute. It consists of a date auction to be held in conjuction with MIT's Spring Weekend. Both groups and individuals are encouraged volunteer for and participate in the date auction. The Date Auction will provide a number of great "date type" activities for the auctionees and winning bidders.
Q. Who is organizing it?
A. In the past, Derby Days has been an exclusive Sigma Chi tradition, limiting itself to Harvard and BU Sigs and sorority participation. Last year, the focus of Derby Days has shifted from a brotherhood building event to a large-scale campus wide philanthropy event. Currently sponsoring Derby Days are Sigma Chi, Wellesley's Tau Zeta Epsilon society, as well as MIT's Spring Weekend.
Q. Why should my sorority / living group / fraternity participate?
A. Derby Days is a unique, easy, and fun way to involve your living group in philanthropy at MIT. It is an opportunity to unite your house with your new freshman class after Rush in friendly competition between other houses. At a time when the MIT rush system is fielding a lot of criticism and struggling to maintain its reputation, it showcases the strength of MIT's communities.
Q. Do you have any promotional materials I could see?
A. Our promotional brochure offers a general overview of what we are trying to do with Derby Days as well as some pictures from years past. Here's a copy of the flyer that we'll be postering with over campus.
Q. How much money does Derby Days intend to raise?
A. Last year Derby Days raised over $1000 for Children's Miracle Network. This money went to the local Children's Miracle Network Hospital, the Children's Hospital Boston. This year Derby Days looks to make a comparable contribution to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
Q. When is Derby Days?
The Derby Days Date Auction is taking place Friday, April 25th.
